About Us
The Tennessee Alliance for Black
Lawyers (TABL) is a delegation of
African American attorneys representing
all areas of the State of Tennessee. TABL is a registered affiliate chapter of
the
National Bar Association, the oldest
and largest organization of black lawyers in the world.
Our Purpose
The general purpose of TABL is to
promote the common business
interests of Tennessee’s African
American bar. We continuously
achieve this goal by prioritizing
four essential tenets:
(1)
unity
Solidarity among Tennessee’s black lawyers and their supporters under one umbrella;
Pooling statewide financial, cultural, intellectual, and political resources;
Resource for African American lawyers in rural areas of Tennessee with no local NBA chapter;
Social and professional networking opportunities; Support for / increased awareness of TLAP and other resources;
Ensuring continued health and success of each of Tennessee’s local NBA Chapters, NBA Region Six, and for the National Bar Association as a whole
,
(2)
diversity
Four fronts: (1) bench, (2) bar, (3) legislature, (4) schools (students AND faculty);
TABL always advocates for QUALIFIED diversification on each of the four fronts (not “handouts” and not just diversity for diversity’s sake);
A diversified approach to achieving and maintaining diversity – public relations and media, common law and the courts, statutory law and the legislature, public forums and dialogue
,
(3)
education
Increasing the number and quality of students, bar members, and academicians of African
American descent within the legal profession; Frequent and economical statewide
Continuing Legal Education; Professionalism, substantive expertise, and
technological sophistication; Student forums and mentoring for all Tennessee
law students, college students, and younger students
, and
(4)
advocacy
United state-wide public voice for NBA members throughout Tennessee on issues of
particular import to lawyers of this State or their families, clients, or
communities; Representation of the interests of Tennessee within Region Six and the greater
NBA; Monitoring and addressing local and state-wide legislation, common law,
regulations, and policies that are germane to our purpose and goals; Lobbying
(to the extent allowable), speaking engagements, and amicus briefing; Vocal issue
advocacy on the statewide level and to a limited extent also on the local level
(where requested by NBA members or chapters)
.
TABL strives to be an active and
influential voice for the African
American lawyers of Tennessee on the
state and national level, as well as
within the National Bar Association.
We strongly advocate for consistent
and representative diversity in the
bar, on the bench, and among the
students and faculty of Tennessee's
law schools. Our four tenets
keep us focused on ever solidifying
and strengthening the African
American bar for the sake of our
members, our colleagues, our
clients, and the successors to whom
we entrust our noble profession.
